Catriona Verner spent the first 16 years of her career at one of the largest criminal law firms in the country. She moved to LCP in early 2017, where she has continued to focus on serious and complex appellate cases.
Catriona has worked exclusively in appellate law since her call to the bar in 2001 and has been involved in the criminal justice system since she began volunteering with the John Howard Society in 1991. Her abilities and passion for criminal defence work have been recognized throughout her career. At the beginning of her career in 2002, there was a feature article in the Globe and Mail on her efforts and challenges in assisting the underprivileged with only Legal Aid funding.
Catriona’s relentless endeavours to secure new trials for her clients has translated into remarkable success over the years. Indeed, in 2012 there was an article in a well-respected legal publishing outlining her extraordinary success rate in homicide appeals at the Court of Appeal for Ontario. And she has continued to have an impressive success rate since that article was published. She has earned the utmost respect from the appellate judiciary and in 2014, the Supreme Court of Canada took the seemingly unprecedented move of commending her advocacy on the record.
In addition to her success in court, Catriona managed the appeal practice in one of the largest criminal law firms in the country, which typically had over 100 open files at any one time. She has spoken at conferences, published a paper, lectured at a law school and represented the Ontario criminal defence bar as an intervener at the Supreme Court of Canada. Moving forward she intends to focus all of her efforts on ensuring her clients have the best possible representation on appeal.
